In this lesson, we will enumerate the 10 most common Internet marketing methods used by successful SFI Affiliates. While space prohibits us from giving you more than a brief introduction to the first five of these methods in this lesson, we will give a brief introduction to the last five in our next lesson and future lessons will address each of these methods in more detail.

MARKETING METHODS

The most common Internet marketing methods, particularly useful in promoting the SFI affiliate program are these:

1) Doorway Pages and Search Engine Registration

2) Banner or Textual Ad Placement (Exchange Programs)

3) Banner or Textual
Ad Placement (Online Classifieds)

4) Banner or Textual Ad Placement (Affiliate and Paid Placement)

5) Building Your Own Content-Rich Website

6) Utilizing an Opt-In Program

7) Hosting FFA Pages

8) Using Safelists, Announcement Lists, and Viral marketing

9) Press Releases, Relationship Building, and Offline Promotion

10) The Latest New Technique

Many of these methods overlap or have much in common. Depending on what you read, there are various ways to describe each of these methods and various names with which to identify them. There is no particular importance to the order in which we have listed them here. The only reason to enumerate them into the list above is for ease of learning.

DOORWAY PAGES AND SEARCH ENGINE REGISTRATION

A "doorway page" is a Web page that is used to lead people to the target interactive site. The doorway page contains a link to your target page. The target page is where you hope the user will take some action, such as purchasing an affiliate product or opting in to your program. The target page sells. The doorway page gets their attention and leads them to the target page. Doorway pages serve two
main purposes: they are used to optimize search engine placement and they allow you to target your initial approach to different demographics.

When you join SFI, you are given links to different target pages that you can use to sell SFI products or recruit affiliates. Because these pages contain what is called a "CGI variable" to identify you as the seller or recruiter, they can not be individually registered in the Search Engines. That is, because there is a "?" in the URL (Website address), search engines will not accept them or will truncate off the most important part—your ID number.

To work around this problem with the search engines, affiliates use doorway pages. Savvy SFI affiliates design and host a Web page on another server with a different name so that the
URL does not contain a question mark. This doorway page then links to one of the
SFI target pages, and the link, of course, contains the CGI variable identifying
the affiliates ID number to ensure proper credit. Really enterprising affiliates
create several different doorway pages, each appealing to different types of people.

Even when there is no need to work around a cgi variable in the URL, Internet marketers use doorway pages to target different demographics. Different things get different people's attention. Many of the affiliates that come into SFI do so because they are very serious about creating a successful home-based business. They
find SFI while searching for information pertaining to home-based businesses or
network marketing. They understand network marketing terminology and are
seeking a comparison of this program with the ones already familiar to them.

Other affiliates come to SFI because they want an Internet business. They may have had little experience with home-based businesses or network marketing. These people understand Internet terminology and are looking for a great affiliate program. Obviously, you have to approach these different types of people differently to attract them to the SFI program.

Thus, it is best to have one doorway page for those seeking a home-based, multi-level business and another doorway page for those seeking a lucrative affiliate rogram. SFI well serves the needs of both, but they need to be drawn to that realization in different ways. You may also want to have different doorway pages for younger prospects and older prospects; one for the highly educated and one for those with little formal education; one for those who are already financially successful but want an Internet income and one for those who are still struggling daily with bills and creditors. There are many different demographic groups that you can target with different doorway pages.

The best doorway pages are pages that attract the targeted demographic by providing useful information or entertainment, while remaining easy to navigate. Stay tuned to future lessons to learn how even the technically challenged can easily create useful content for their Websites.

When you have your doorway pages in place, you need to register them with the search engines. There are many factors involved in doing this properly. You need to prepare your pages properly with metatags, keywords, descriptions, keyword balancing, content indications, as well as incoming and outgoing link considerations. You then need to know the right submission procedure and schedule your submissions properly for each major search engine or directory.

BANNER OR TEXTUAL AD PLACEMENT (EXCHANGE PROGRAMS)

To gain traffic for your Website, you need to prepare effective banners
and textual ads. In SFI, this is already done for you. Having banners and textual
ads prepared, you need to find places on the Internet to place these banners and
textual ads.
One of the earliest methods devised on the Internet was banner
exchanges. You agree with other Website owners to place their ad on your page in
exchange for placing your ad on their page. This process has been facilitated by the
emergence of several banner exchange programs. You register with the exchange
program, upload your banner, and your banner will automatically appear on other
registered Web pages throughout the world. In exchange, they provide code for you to
put on your Web page, which hosts rotating banners from other sites. These are not
particularly effective, mainly because placement in context on a page is rarely
achieved. Context placement is crucial to an ad or banner being effective in drawing
traffic.

Banner exchanges are very useful for one purpose, however. Most of the
exchange programs allow you to target the types of pages on which your banners will be placed. If you happen to have a high-traffic Website which appeals to one
demographic, but your target in a particular affiliate program is another demographic, you can "exchange" your traffic through use of an exchange program. Say your site draws high traffic from retired people who love to garden and travel. With
a banner exchange, you can have your banner targeted to sites which appeal to home-based entrepreneurs. In return, you host banners on your site which target the group which frequents your site (advertising, for example, gardening tools or motor homes). Since effective context placement is much more likely to be achieved in this situation, it usually works fairly well for all parties involved.

BANNER OR TEXTUAL AD PLACEMENT (ONLINE CLASSIFIEDS)

One of the easiest ways to get your banners and ads on a high-traffic Website is to place them on some online classified ad pages. Several major sites allow you to
place classified ads for free. There are others, such as Yahoo!, that charge fees
for placement of classifieds. These can be effective depending upon the volume of ads being submitted at any given time. If it is a high traffic site, your ad will only appear for a matter of hours before it is pushed too far down by new submissions to be useful. Daily attention and resubmission is crucial to an effective
classified ad campaign on the free sites.

Starting with classified ads is a good way to get your feet wet in Internet marketing.

BANNER OR TEXTUAL AD PLACEMENT (AFFILIATE AND
PAID PLACEMENT)

You can also pay to have your banner or ad placed on other Websites. This is a broad category that covers many different possible arrangements. You can pay for placement for a period of time. You can pay only for clicks actually received through your ad on a site. You can pay only for sales or sign-ups that come through a particular site. Affiliate programs encompass the latter of these options. There are services where you can register an affiliate program and people who go to these services can sign up to host your ads. When they sign up, they download your banner or ad to their site. The service independently tracks and verifies the clicks, sales, or sign-ups, that originate from particular affiliate sites and facilitates the payments that are due.

Also included in this category are ezine ads. Ezines are e-mail newsletters that
people have opted-in to receive. They are full of interesting content so that people actually read them when they show up in their inboxes. You can pay the ezine publisher to include your ad and a link to your site in an ezine edition.
Ideally, your ad will fit into the context of the information in that particular ezine edition.

"Pay-pers"—services which pay people to receive and read e-mail or host software which displays ads on their screen—also fall under this category. You can pay to have your e-mail ad sent to people who have agreed to receive the e-mail for a small fee per e-mail. This is not spam because the people who receive the e-mail have opted to receive it in exchange for a small payment per e-mail received and read. These programs are very effective because the e-mails are actually read and the links clicked.

BUILDING YOUR OWN
CONTENT RICH WEBSITE

You must use Websites and opt-in programs instead. We discussed the doorway site concept at the beginning of this lesson. Whether a doorway page or an independent target site, the most effective Internet marketing method available is to have a site with rich substantive content and entertaining attention grabbers. There are hundreds of thousands of Websites on the Internet now that consist of nothing more than banner ads thrown on a page. They are all worthless! There is no point in creating a Website if it does not have content. Your Website must have both value and ease of use to be effective in drawing and keeping traffic. 1. Don’t hide what you sell
In many instances, the "content" that visitors want is information about the product they want to buy. They also increase sales by putting items that make good impulse buys in places that you pass through to get out of the store. Fast food stores and supermarkets often have candy and magazines near the check out counter. Clothing stores may have socks, jewelry or perfume near the cash register.

You can use similar tactics on your web site to increase product sales. For instance, if you have an article on how to choose digital cameras, create a small ad for digital cameras if you sell them and put it in the margin of the article. If you sell books, write short book reviews and put a link in each book review to a place on your site where the reader can buy the book you are reviewing. Another tactic: run banner ads for your own own products on editorial pages on your web site. These ads will work like ads on the window of your favorite supermarket. They'll remind visitors of goodies you have in other parts of your web site.

5. Suggest add-on sales
One of the easiest ways to increase sales is to let customers who are about to make a purchase know about related products they may want to buy. If your shopping cart software allows it, include one or two links to related products from the shopping cart screen. If you can’t easily do that, include the link to related products on a thank you page.

6. Give them ordering choices
Not everyone is comfortable giving out credit card information over the Internet, and not everyone likes to shop with a credit card. To maximize your sales, be sure you give customers alternate methods for making a purchase. In addition to your online order form, provide a way for people to order by telephone, by fax and by mail. Make those options easy to find, too. If your customer has to hunt for ways to make a purchase, you'll lose sales.

If you find too many customers use call, fax or mail their order, consider adding a surcharge for orders that aren't placed electronically. Or, increase your prices slightly and then offer a discount for ordering online.

7. Tell them how to reach you
Customers want to know who you are and how they can contact after they've made a purchase. And they want that information to be easy to find. If it isn't they may question your honesty or credibility and move on to a competitor's web site to make their purchase.

You can avoid that trap by by having a "contact us" button on every page of your web site. The "Contact us " button can lead to a web page that lists your business name, business email address, telephone, fax and other information customers may need to know. If you don't want to take the calls yourself, have an answering service take them for you.

Tip: Remember the Internet is "on" 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. People can and do use it all night long. If you don't have someone answering phones 24 hours a day, be sure to indicate your hours of operation and your time zone with your contact information.

8. Include a feedback form
A feedback form serves three purposes. First, it gives your customers another way to reach you. Second, it lets you know what customers think about your products and services and what they wanted but can't find. Finally, the feedback form is good for public relations. Having it on your site will help customers form an impression of your company as one that cares what it's customers have to say.

Put the feedback form where people can find it easily on your web site. This might be on a navigational menu, or as a text link.

9. Read and answer email at least once a day
One of the leading attractions of the Internet is its immediacy. You can find information, shop for products, send and receive letters, place orders, send invoices, view pictures, and access documents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But that's also one of the leading disadvantages of the web – at least for web site owners. Because the web and online services are available 24 hours a day, visitors expect them to be staffed around the clock, too. If they have a question, they expect to get a response in hours, rather than days as they might if they sent a question to your company using traditional mail.

To keep customers happy, therefore, plan to answer all email within 24 hours or less. If you don't answer your email in a timely fashion, your customers are likely to have little difficulty finding one of your competitors on the web.

10. Help people who stumble into your web site find their way back
When visitors find your web site, they may save or print some of your information to read at a later time. When they find that information later on, they may want to return to your site. To make sure they can find their way back, be sure that every page on your site includes the name of your web site, your phone number and your URL on the bottom of the page. To avoid typing that information in manually on every page include it on the bottom of whatever template you use to create web pages.

Rejected: $6M Offer for Cricket.com

Domain name company Communicate.com (OTCBB: CMNN.ob) rejected a $6M offer for the domain name Cricket.com, according to an article in Kiplinger magazine.

The article by columnist Andrew Feinberg picks Communicate.com as a “smart speculation” but also uncovers more details about the growing company. The article is likely the reason Communicate.com’s stock price soared 38% last week to close at $2.70 per share. With microcap stocks, a little bit of buying activity can move stocks quickly.

According to the article:

-Communicate.com is planning a name change (smart move, it doesn’t make sense for what the company has become)

-The company owns 1,100 domain names

-The company turned down $6M for Cricket.com because it wants to develop the domain. ESPN paid $35M for CricInfo.com, a leading cricket site.

-Feinberg argues the company is probably worth 50% more than the previous $1.97 trading price because of the value of its domains, the $7M it has in cash, and that its leading site Perfume.com did $10M in revenue last year. Of course, much of that 50% has been realized over the past week.

-Feinberg points to the strong management team as a key indicator of future success

-The company plans to raise $15M to $40M in a stock offering in the first half of 2008

Cricket.com used to be a parked page with ads for mobile phones and a disclaimer that it wasn’t affiliated with Cricket Wireless. Cricket Wireless is a popular low-cost wireless service from Leap Wireless (NASDAQ: LEAP). I wouldn’t be surprised if Cricket Wireless made the $6M offer for the domain. The company’s domain name is MyCricket.com. No joke.

The parked page put the company in sketchy legal territory, so it is good to see that it now has a “coming soon” page at the domain.

In May of 2007 I predicted that Cricket.com could sell for over $1M. Look for pay-per-click revenue to decline as Cricket.com was the company’s top grossing parked domain name. But it’s all part of the company’s strategy: parking is just a way to generate revenue while developing domains into destinations.

I am a big fan of Johh Chow. So, I figured, I should try ordering a review for PickyDomains on his website, which ain't cheap - $500 to be exact.

Want to know if it was worth it? OK, you decide.

I had to wait over a week for review to be done. The review was good, there was just one inaccuracy - we do have a lot of celebrity clients, like Yanik Silver or Aaron Wall (of SEOBook.com) or Wendy Piersall (eMomsAtHome.Com), but domains we picked for them were not SEOBook.com or eMomsAtHome.Com, as the review implies.

The traffic from JohnChow.Com to PickyDomains.com was surprisingly low - only 100-150 visitors a day for the first two days. How is it possbile, if so many people read John and he has so many RSS subscribers - I have no idea. I guess that people don't really care to read paid reviews. There were three sales that I can attribute to review, so I am positive that review will pay for itself over time.

I was surprised that many of our clients and contirbutors read that review and decided to comment on the service - 100% positive feedback. However, it was informative to read comments by people who heard about PickyDomains.com for the first time ever (despite the fact that the service was profiled by major newspapers).

Some claimed that there is no need for the service (even though the service has over 500 clients and more and more people come to us every day, which many clients ordering multiple domains). Others voiced fears that it's some sort of scam (I guess they did not bother to Google 'PickyDomains').

It's a bit to early to tell, but I am positive that review on John's site will give me some additional exposure on sites that track Web 2.0 projects - after all we are one of the few success stories in this niche, but still remain a relative unknown. Hopefull, some major bloggers (who read JohnChow.Com) will profile the service too. I am getting some inquiries already.

Pizza.Com On Sale For $3 Million

Fourteen years ago, Chris Clark shelled out 20 bucks to register the domain name “pizza.com.” Tomorrow afternoon, he’s selling it to the highest bidder for somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 million.

“It’s crazy; it’s just crazy,” he said somewhat giddily this morning from his home in North Potomac. By then, a week’s worth of anonymous bidding at an online auction site had already pushed the price to $2.6 million. The auction closes at 2 p.m. today.

“That amount of money is significant,” said 43-year-old Clark, who recently launched a software company. “It will make a significant difference in my life, for sure.”

With more than 150 million domain names already registered, coming up with unused — and uncomplicated —Web addresses is nearly impossible. That’s led to an active secondary sales market, where domain owners try reselling their Web names to big corporate spenders.

Clark bought the name in 1994, when the Web was just beginning to commercialize, though he had no idea what a winning lottery ticket it would become. Back then, he had launched an Internet consulting firm and thought the domain would help him score a contract with a pizza company. But no contract ever came through, and he sold the business in 2000. Clark’s latest venture, Minestream Software Corp, provides Internet protection products.

He kept up the annual $20 registration fees on the pizza.com name, though, and basically sat on the site, selling advertising space here and there. About a year ago, he and a friend turned it into a profitable pizza directory and advertising site that earns more than the $5,000 it costs to maintain.

In January, he posted a notice on the site saying the domain was for sale and inviting would-be buyers to weigh in. After receiving six-figure offers through e-mail, Clark said he approached Sedo, the international online auctioneer that handled the Vodka.com sale.

The first pizza bid was for $100 on March 27th. The price was up to a half-million dollars the following morning. By the 29th, the bidding hit $2 million, and Clark was officially locked into the sale. That was his minimum price.

By tomorrow afternoon, the deal should be sealed. It will take a few days to complete the transaction, transfer the domain and get Clark his windfall.

He doesn’t have any immediate plans for the money, he said. But he does have a regret: not buying more domains.

“In ’94, you could have just registered everything and anything,” Clark said. “I think about that now, yeah.”
